Yo Teammates!
Welcome to Match the Mayor IV …
I was told we already had 800 teammates signed up as of a few days ago – 800 teammates deciding to join hands across the country and encourage each other to taking or maintaining some solid steps towards living healthier lives. So often we are able to do more special things when we form a team than we can when we operate by ourselves. Funny thing …
For many of us, we will focus on number of minutes of exercise each day and servings of fruit and produce. But we want to make clear you can set any life goal you want – from reading a book for a 30 minutes each day, to losing weight, to being outside – anything that would represent a significant positive step towards a healthier life for you.
I am on my annual vacation in Wisconsin, where I was raised. The good news is I will get good exercise. The bad news is we will be eating at a lot of rural restaurants which do not have much in the way of fruit and vegetables.
But enough of the excuses – I am psyched for working hard to be a good partner to the rest of you, and for having you help me get exercise 6 days a week, for a total of 240 minutes or more, plus averaging 3 servings of healthy fiber, fruit and veggies once I am away from our cottage up here.
Remember the Buddhist quote I love … “One cannot pour from an empty cup.” One cannot give what you do not have. So we need our Village Vitality programs and ethic, so we are coming from a healthy spot in order to give gifts to others – whether that is our family, our friends, our teammates or our patients. Not to mention the gift we deserve to get ourselves, when we give ourselves the gift of a healthier life.
One for All & All for One (not just a slogan to some of us). Let’s do it.

KT,
I am looking forward to doing Match the Mayor IV with you. This will be my fourth year to participate and I am hoping it will show the greatest improvements. I work full time and am in school for my BA in Psychology. I am also a single mom living my life with High Blood Pressure. I am very busy and because of that I have put myself second. Throughout the next few weeks I plan to make myself as important as my life and make working out a routine. I hope that by the end of this I am new person with greater joy for health and also setting a great example for my daughter to always take care of yourself.
Thank You for being such a great Role Model. Even on vacation!!

KT –I will start my adventure with a run or bike ride, first thing tomorrow. This morning I had a wonderful 40 minute fun in the woods, and gave my 23 year old son a run for his money! Until the last couple hundred yards, at which point he left me behind …. Oh well … KT
Joanne Christopher, CHARLOTTE, NCThis is my first time. I want to form team too. 😀
KT –Dear Joanne,This is all about team. The essence of a team. A virtual team, but no less real. KT
Zorana Ngai, EL SEGUNDO, CAHow cool! I want to form a team at the Playa… anyone? 🙂
KT –Dear Zorana,The Play has a lot of healthy folks, did anyone respond yet? KT
Claire Robert, DONALDSONVILLE, LAThanks DaVita, for helping to keep us healthy! We do so much to help others stay healthy and sometimes neglect ourselves! Anybody down south want to be in a team?
KT –Dear Claire, Thanks for reaching out to others in your “neighborhood” .. nothing like neighbors working together. KT
Ginger Priddy, BRENTWOOD, TNI’m very excited. I can’t wait to get started.
KT –Go Team Music City! Go Ginger! KT
Jeff Haiduk, TACOMA, WABOOYAH!! Last year was crazy hard to keep up with KT!!! I was getting back to a decent workout routine…and he was training for TOUR DAVITA….LOL!!! Hopefully we can catch him this year. BRING IT KT!!!

Andrea Walsh, LOUISVILLE, KYThis is my first year doing this and I am very excited!!
KT –Welcome Andrea! KT
Carol Adrian, ONTARIO, CACan’t wait to start! I’m getting a head start by dusting off my ice skates and heading for the ice rink with my grandson today!

Carol Ann Runcik, KANSAS CITY, MOLooking forward to this starting…anyone want to join my group. u 2 might need a kick start to a healthy life.
KT –Yo Carol, the way I think about it all 800 of us are a team … altho sometimes sub-teams emerge, that is cool too. KT

Gilbert Marlowe, MINNEAPOLIS, MNRemember: No matter whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.

Leslie Tighe, MUNSTER, INHi, thank you DaVita. I am so happy we’re doing some healthy activity motivators again, yet another chance to start over again. “Don’t let what we can’t do interfere with what we can do”!!! It starts today. A better healthier me. Hooray….
KT –Did you start it that day, Leslie? KT
Ha Nguyen, BRENTWOOD, TNThis sounds like so much fun!! I’m so motivated; I ate a spinach salad and a papaya. Papayas are a good source of fiber and carries lots antioxidant nutrients such as carotenes (good for skin), vitamin C, B, and foliate acid. If anyone wants to venture out and try some different, you can deseed them, cut them up, and store it in a bowl, and place it in the fridge for you to ready to eat.
KT –Dear Ha, thx for the advice and encouragement! I had 8 ears of sweet corn tonight, I can’t recommend that with quite the same enthusiasm. Although it tasted great. KT
CJ Engle, TACOMA, WAI do the same thing. My husband thinks I’m nuts, but the frozen berries keep me cool, give me extra energy, and they taste good!
KT –Darn straight. KT
Katrina Neal, NORTH LAS VEGAS, NVWe like grapes and raspberries. Plus the raspberries have one of the highest fiber counts out of the fruits.
KT –Dear Katrina, I did not know that. I eat mixed berries a couple times a week. raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. At least I assume they are blackberries, all the little bumps. KT
Kimberly Taylor, PROVO, UT I am really glad we’re doing something again; I really like our last adventure when we were keeping track of our fruits and veggies. Thanks, DaVita
KT -Dear Kimberly … welcome back! KT
Lindsey McPherson, VINCENNES, INI’m also happy we are doing this again… I’m the leader from the winning team from colorful choices. my team is ready for this one too…We love being able to do something that helps us get to know one another plus get fit all at the same time GOOD LUCK to your team…..
KT –Dear Lindsey – congrats for colorful choices victory! Good thing about that competition is that everyone who participates is a winner … KT
Kimberly Taylor, PROVO, UT Hey Lindsey do you need an extra teammate? My clinic didn’t get a team together. I actually did really well on my own. On average I consume about 15 servings of fruits and greens a day. I am totally motivated so if you need an extra teammate consider me:) Kim
KT –Kimberly – 15, that is amazing! KT
Sara Carlson The last Match the Mayor motivated me to exercise more and the results kept me motivated. I’m looking forward to this adventure
KT –Yo Sarah – did you maintain the higher level of exercise, and if so for how long? Well done! KT
Debbie Benner, IRVINE, CA I am so excited that our Village promotes healthy choices for our teammates. Let’s inspire each other to do and feel better.
KT –Yo Debbie – right on. KT
Elaine Morris, NORTH LAS VEGAS, NVJoin in on the fun!
KT –Yo Elaine, That’s right! KT
Paula Dixon, BALTIMORE, MD Hey, this weight loss and exercise really does work. I have lost 40lbs over the last year and my BP meds are cut in half!! Aim is to get rid of the rest of the BP meds and the diabetic meds. Expect this will help me keep going as I have begun to drag my feet!!
KT –Dear Paula, 40 pounds and lower meds that is AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!! KT
Sarah Murry, TACOMA, WAI’m thrilled for this year’s Match the Mayor! This will be a great motivator for me to really up my mileage in preparation for the Susan G. Komen 3 day in September! See you all out on the Trails 🙂
KT –Yo Sarah – It is great you are doing stuff for causes like the Komen cause … a big shout out for you! KT
Marisol Avila, YUCAIPA, CA “Don’t be afraid to attempt something new. Remember, it was amateurs who built the ark. It was professionals that built the Titanic.” – Unknown
KT –Dear Marisol – that is a good one. KT
Lillie Magallanes, RIVERSIDE, CA Hi Marisol, I’m excited to be your “Trail Mate” and to start this journey and am hoping to keep the routine going after this ends.
KT –Yes Lillie, that is the idea for us all … build a new and healthy habit …. KT
Susan Hellekson, BALTIMORE, MD I am really excited to begin this journey with my “trail buddies” as well as the rest of DaVita who is energetic enough to begin walking to a healthier you! Good luck everyone!
KT –Go Susan!!! KT
Lindsey McPherson, VINCENNES, INI wish it lasted longer 🙁 I hope they do something else fun after this one!! Can’t wait to start!!!!!!!!!
KT –Dear Lindsey – the thinking is the novelty wears off after awhile, and some people postpone things if the ending point is too far away … and if we haven’t helped build new habits by then it is time to take a break before we try again. That is why we keep it to the time we do. but a sub-team can keep their own thing going, that is incredibly healthy! KT
Christa Babel, DENVER, COIt’s a “step” in the right direction – thank you to my friend/teammate Cathy for encouraging the participation!
KT –Dear Christa – pls tell Cathy thanks from the Mayor! KT
Jean Millet, ONTARIO, CA I am so excited! I have been walking on my own, and this will help motivate me to keep it up!
KT -Dear Jean – the next time you are walking, just picture that you are doing it with 800 other people, all of them cheering you on!!!!!!!!!!! KT
Monique Morrison-Cook, RIVERSIDE, CAYay. If we can do it- You can do it! You have a ton of support from PD Central 🙂
KT –Yo Monique – thx for offering that support! KT
Deborah Kelley, EL SEGUNDO, CAIs anyone from Patient Pathway enrolled yet? If so, please let me know 🙂
KT –Yo Deborah – any responses yet? KT
Deborah Kelley, EL SEGUNDO, CAI am excited to have teammates available to help me in my goals to improve my health. Looking forward to our adventures 🙂
KT –Dear Deborah – ride on! KT
Grace Williams Excited to get started on the Health Trails.
KT –Dear Grace – and we are excited to join you! KT

KT –Dear Diane – welcome to the Village! KT
Travis West, BRENTWOOD, TN Excited to get started. I really liked the event from last year even if I started late.
KT –Dear Travis – did anything from last year continue for a good long time? KT

Dear KT and the rest of my Davitians,
I just want to thank you for providing such a wonderful program to assist with the welfare of our health and nutrional needs. I became a part of this wonderful family on Feb 1st of this year and I am so glad and proud to be a Davitian. 🙂 I am a social Worker full time and I am also my 83 yo Mothers caregiver. I decided really fast that I needed to do something to take care of myself. I was so excited when I heard about village vitality, I signed up immediately. On yesterday, I dusted off my xbox360 and did the Zumba workout. Even though my workout only lasted for 10 minutes, lol I am still excited and hopeful that by next week I will be able to increase my workout time to 15 mins. I am going to work on my fruits and veggies and fiber as I should be in “Fast Food anonymous” 🙂 I am happy that I am not alone and have a wonderful village of people to help inspire and be inspired!!
God Bless!!

KT- You are truly an inspiration! Not only do your share your successes, but also when it doesn’t go so well. We all have those kind of days and its OK to just get right back on track. Happy Healthy Vacation!

This was fun doing this last year and excited to see how things go. I really like the stages and the “chatter” between KT and everyone. See you at the finish line.

We have almost signed up our entire clinic into 4 person teams! This is a great way to promote physical well being and team building. Each group is doing an activity that they enjoy – Zumba, walking, biking, weight lifting. I am excited to see how everyone does; and what connections they make with each other.
