Yo DaVita !!
Things have been a tad hectic. I got a short workout on Tuesday am, only 27 minutes on the bike and 3 min of stretching. Total = 30. I had to run to the airport to start my journey.
On the San Francisco to Denver leg I worked with Josh Golomb on DaVita RX. Then he got off in Denver, and Laura Mildenberger got on so we could work on People Services all the way to Washington DC. Then I did a few hundred emails and some other tasks on the DC to Europe leg, leaving the last 3 hours for some sleep.
The first day in Europe is tough, because the local clock says 2 pm while your body is saying it is 5 am and you have only had 3 hours of sleep. But if you go to bed you will never get to sleep that night, so I headed to the gym for a workout (27 minutes of biking, 3 minutes of stretching, total of 30 again). Then I took a quick tour of the city, then did some work at the desk in my hotel room, up until it was time for my business dinner.
The dinner ended at 9 pm local time, and I was really dragging. But I had some phone calls booked with people back in the States, where it was the middle of the day – and my energy returned, so I just completed 3 hours of calls and email. Now I will move towards bed, we have a big day here tomorrow, several meetings with a dialysis manufacturer, then a dinner.
I am tired, but it feels good to know I am on Route 66 with over 800 other teammates. Let’s do it!!!
All the best!

KT –
It’s my first year participating in Match the Mayor, and I’m excited to put fitness back as a priority in my life! Reading your blog for today has really given me more motivation to make the time to do it. I was thinking that my schedule was hectic…but after seeing all that you’ve juggled and that you still managed to work out – no more excuses for me! Thank you for taking the time to share, it is truly inspiring. My competitive spirit is in full gear, because I have some catching up to do to your 900 miles. 🙂
Take care,
Sarah

This is my first year. My Rte 66 walks have been instrumental in helping me to quit smoking. I gained a pound and a half from nervous eating (LOL) but at least I’m not smoking. I imagine that I would’ve gained 10 lbs if I wasn’t walking.
So here we are on day 9 and I’m tobacco free!

KT you have been a great inspiration to us all. You have an extremly busy schedule and you still make sure you get in your exercise. I now make time every day for some exercise. If I can’t work out after work I started getting up early and working out before work.

I agree, KT… if you can include fitness into that busy travel schedule, I can certainly maintain it in my daily calendar that does not include business travel – kudos!
I’ve logged 780 minutes to date and I’m in Foyil, OK after 9 roadsigns. This week for me has been a week of 30-minute workouts, as well – as opposed to my normal goal of 60 minutes 5x/week. The short week, the 4-day weekend, and a couple of extended workdays all contributed to the reduced time at the gym or the trail, but I did not bail out, so I’m pleased with my decisions to push through regardless of my calendar this week. I’ve got a gym date scheduled for 5:30-6:30PM for 20 minutes of interval training followed by 40 minutes of core and circuit training.
Make it a great day at DaVita!

P.S. Exciting news! I found a 17′ fiberglass canoe at a local garage sale a week ago and I am going to try her out this weekend if the weather is nice! Sooo excited to try something new that also translates into fitness fun! Woot woot!

I am honored to be taking this journey with so many dedicated teammates. And KT you have quite a schedule and to continue to get in your exercise shows how dedicated you are to fitness and everything you do. I am excited to announce that since I started my journey 4 weeks ago I have lost 12 pounds and my clothes do not fit right…they are getting too big!
I am discovering that my favorite thing during my day is the time I set aside for myself to go to the gym and hit it hard. I have been training with a friend who is very knowledgable and has me on a very hard workout routine. It wiped me out and kicked me in the pants last night, but not for long!
Congratulations to all of you who are taking this journey…let’s do it!

Hi All,
I just started the journey 2 days ago, as I thought I was too inundated with work to fit in exercise last week…I am really inspired that KT can find the 30 minutes to exercise in his incredibly packed schedule, so from now on…no excuses! My fiance and I are getting up early and exercising together, so I have company in my workouts.
I know I have some catching up to do to complete the journey, but I am up to the challenge!
Keep up the good work all!

After reading KT’s schedule and how he found the time to exercise I don’t think I have any excuses! So I will be hitting the DVD’s I have hard this week. I have a 30 day shred that is a killer and in the morning’s I look at it on the way back to bed!…My goal is at least twice next week in the morning added to the cardio at night.
Stacy, isn’t it a nice problem to have…clothes too big! Those big paper clips are good in a pinch to hold your pants up if you forget the safety pin.
I have lost a total of 60 lbs over the last 2 years and have about 25 to go. My goal is by Thanksgiving!…We can do this!!

Last night, after going to a meeting and then out to eat to support the Red Cross in our area-I took the dog for a walk because I wanted to get into Oklahoma!! Didn’t quite make it…I’m right on the border…but this program is incredibly motivating for me!! Thank you for creating it…and I will be in Oklahoma by tonight!! (I never realized Missouri was such a L-O-N-G state.

This is my first year participating, I followed last year but did not participate. In Feb 2010, I signed on with a trainer twice a week for 6 months; now that my six months is over I have decided to just take classes, which I will start this week.
In reading comments of everyone, this helps keep me motivated and I have made my goal to participate in this years ride. I have a lot of work ahead of me, but I do feel better physically, now I just need to find ways to decrease the weight.
KT you are an inspiration to many, reading how you can workout with your busy schedule, motivates me not to miss one day of work out, even if is only 30 minutes a day.
Congratulations to all, love reading all your comments.

Love all the comments!
As a result of last years’ Match the Mayor and renewed fitness goals, I’ve gone from a size 18 to a size 12 so all my clothes are new as of November, March, and this summer, so I’m really pumped about that! I used to hate shopping for clothes, but now I just love shopping the clearance racks for new clothes in a size 12! I got real brave recently and got a couple of size 10 pieces, which are of course currently a little too snug – so my goal is to get into those by next month!

Last year I joined the Match and started my fitness weight loss program. I am 12 pounds lighter this year than last. So my hope is this year will jump start yet another weight loss as well as being fit and I can say the same thing next year. The Route 66 is a fun way of getting more teammates involved.

Hi Teammates
Thanks, KT, your blog can certainly serve as a motivation tool. I thought I was busy, whew! I love this Route 66. If its getting late and I haven’t exercised, I tell myself that I won’t have anything to post the next morning. The other night I was at the gym at 9:30 p.m.! Never would have happened before.

Yo KT and other Route 66 travelers – yes, we are in this together and knowing there s a small but mighty group of TM’s from our Village gets me going after a long day! I am new to Davita and, after attempts with other places of employment to “get in the wellness/fitness groove” this is by far the best initiative I’ve seen and been a part of.

Must just be me, but if I exercise too vigorously too late – I get a very bad case of insomnia. Does this happen to anyone else?
I use that as my motivation to hit the gym right after work, which serves a dual purpose of not going home and then getting distracted by other things on my “to do” list.
I have had quite the journey of learning how to put ME first, after 24+ years of parenting, homemaking, working, and wife-ing. It has been a great thing to see what happens when I do place myself at the top of my priority list….. wow. I really CAN GTRST (get the right stuff done)!
Going right after work also provides me with another benefit: it helps me to more carefully consider my dinner options …. meaning that I’m not willing to have added fats or calories if I’ve just come from the gym or outside activity!!
Go TM!

Hi to all the Route 66ers. Wow KT-three hours of sleep and still managed to travel Route 66! I am so glad I joined you all. It is more motivating than I had imagined! I joined the fitness center (right next door to the facility)in June so I got a small head start. A re-evaluation done today reveal a substanial decrease in LDL, triglycerides, blood sugar and BP. On Route 66, I have gone 798 miles, and 6 road signs (I think) and 409 minutes. Gotta catch KT :o)

Pamela it is not just you. I can’t exercise late in the evening either. I go right after work or now if I can’t do it right after I get up earlier in the morning and do it before work. Also I have a tendancy that once I get home I am not going back out, lol.

This is my 3rd Match the Mayor. The first year helped me to finally start losing some weight. I have kept working on it and lost 25 pounds so I was able to get rid of some clothes that were too big and start wearing others I had wanted to get back into. I love this year’s Match the Mayor theme of fitness and traveling along Route 66. I have never been a really physically active person and as I got older my knees developed arthritis which made walking and activity painful. I have had them both replaced in the last two years and am pain free. I feel like a normal person now and look forward to being more active. I have been riding my stationary exercise bike every day and walking more. The first night of Match the Mayor I had an accident on my bike. (Yes, on a stationary bike!) I watch TV while I ride and I was pedaling hard when the remote got in the way of my calf and gave me a large gash. I slapped some tissue on it and kept going until I finished my ride. My teammates here at Team Evergreen got a kick out of it. I enjoy reading the comments and it sounds like everyone is working hard. Good luck with your goals!
I am looking forward to seeing some of you when you come to Tacoma for Tour DaVita.

Hi Debbie! your post cracked me up. Stationary bikes and remotes don’t mix I guess. We should start a Davita Walking Wounded team. I had knee replacement and back surgery as well in the last few years and it makes a huge difference when all the parts work and don’t hurt. Although every now and then when I get twingy I grab the ice pack and keep going..good for you! Can’t let a few aches and pains stop us from reaching our goals. I must say you were very couragious to get both knees done within a short amount of time…one was enough for me! You keep on keeping on!

You guys crack me up – stationary bike accident and “walking wounded” – hilarious (after it stops hurting, that is).
It was, in part, my knees and back that inspired me to really focus on fitness and weight loss…. at 49 my knees were starting to hurt and I’d had one back surgery already. I knew I was carrying too much weight on my small (5’2″) frame – my “real” age and my biological age calculated at the gym were 10 years apart! At 49 I had the body of a 58-year-old. Shocking!
I feel so much better now that I’ve dumped off that 50+ lbs. – knees and back feel great. (And now I know that I better be careful on the bike!)

Hi Pam-isn’t it a great feeling! It’s nice not to carry around the extra “luggage”. Knees and backs should be hanlded with TLC and getting the weight off is the best thing to keep them healthy. When my back healed I started to do baby cobra’s to strengthen the muscles in my lower back and core. I want to keep it a one back surgery in my lifetime so that and this are great motivators to stay in shape!

Hi Diane, I wanted to ask you how to do a baby cobra. I had my back go out really bad about 7-8 weeks ago. The worst it has ever gone out in my life. Was bed ridden for 6 days. Which is a first. This was after I had lost 47lbs at that time. I have lost 66lbs now but still seem to always have a backache of some sort.
Thanks
Georgia

Amen, Diane – really agree with taking care of the knees and back. Between the time my back went out (May 01) to when it was repaired (August 01) was some of the worst debilitating pain I’ve ever experienced – and yes – bedridden at times, and still in pain. Now that it’s repaired and I’ve lost the majority of my excess baggage, I do back and core strengthening exercises. Not sure about the “cobra”, but all of the core and some of the strength-training machines at the gym focus on one’s back.
Last night I did 20 minutes of cardio – interval training, followed by 40 minutes of core and strength training of upper & lower body, a 550-calorie workout. Felt great! Tomorrow – my first Zumba class at 9AM!
Make it a great day at DaVita, girls and guys!

Pamela you will have to tell us how the Zumba class is. I have always wanted to try it. Right now I have just been doing a little more than an hour on the elliptical. I meet with a trainer on Monday for strength training and some back strengthening to keep me from reinjurying it.
Have fun tomorrow

Pamela and Georgia, I have taken Zumba several times and absolutely love it. I try to get it in once a week. If you like to dance and love a great cardio workout you will love this class. It is up beat, energetic and you get to look silly with a bunch of other people shooting for a common goal! Both of you are fighters and determined…keep it up!

Hi Georgia, to do the baby cobra lie on your stomach with your hands on either side flat on the floor next to your head. Then lift up your head and torso as much as you can using as much of your back muscles as you can using your hands and arms to steady you and for support until your back muscles are strong enough to where you don’t have to use your hands or arms. You eventually graduate to Superman with your arms out in front and lift your head, torso and pretend you are flying! I had to wait a year after my surgery to do this exercise and I don’t push it too much but what a difference it has made in my core strength.

Thanks Stacey about info on Zumba. I know that they have the class at the Y that I belong too but I don’t think they have it every week. Will definetly have to check into it. Sounds really fun.

Diane, Pamela, Georgia your comments are great! You should be really proud of yourselves! I feel really lucky that I don’t have back problems. It seems like they are harder to fix than the knee replacement. I feel like a normal person now that I don’t have pain and I am excited to be more active. I have been trying to get up the nerve to try Zumba too. I am sure I will end up being the one who can’t keep up but it looks like a lot of fun! Stacey, thanks for the input about it.

Hi Debbie, I haven’t tried Zumba yet but I hear it’s a blast and a great workout! I like you have to work up the nerve because I usually don’t like exercising in a group but I would like to try it. As far as keeping up from what I have heard there are no worries there-everyone has the same problem trying to keep up with the instructor. I’m glad my back is fixed too although I would do the back surgery anyday before I get another knee replacement. On a scale of 1-10 it’s about a 12.
Georgia, let me know how that baby cobra exercise works for you-Pamela yes let us know how the Zumba class turned out.

I did well on my exercise this weekend, but not 100% on target with my food choices!
Friday went to Happy Hour with girlfriends (2 glasses merlot, salad, steak kabobs, and apple crisp with ice cream); when we do this again, I’ll pass on the dessert! We went out dancing from 9:30-midnight afterwards.
Saturday AM – ZUMBA! That was a very challenging workout; I’m sure I looked pretty funny attempting some of those moves! Food choices: Fast Fuel protien shake pre-ZUMBA; banana and protein bar after. We then attended a family b-day party/cookout noon-10PM & enjoyed picnic food: potato salad (both meals), hamburger (noon), BBQ ribs (dinner), baked beans (both meals), 3 beers (total), and birthday cake (both meals). Can I just say “uff da” here?
Sunday: coffee for breakfast, put in 5 hours of DaVita work 11:30-5:30, had 2 grilled cheese sandwiches ~2PM; housework 5:30-7:30PM; popcorn and a DVD ~8PM.
So…. I did well with the fitness component, but lax on food choices. Back on track today!

Pamela you did better than I did on the exercise. Saturday I did exercise but it was only 45 minutes of walking. I didn’t do my usual hour on the ellipitical. Sunday was church and my celebrating my dad’s birthday then church again that night. I didn’t get any exercise in on Sunday. My eating was ok on Sunday. I had chicken casadillas (sp) when we went out for lunch for my dad’s b-day. No dessert here. Course I can’t eat much after the surgery so that helps, lol. Back to the gym after work for my hour on the ellipitical and also meeting with a trainer today to start some strength training.
