From KT – June 4, 2013
Dear DaVitans!!
Day 2 of our glorious shared adventure in Hawaii. Our numbers have swelled to just over 3350, that is the number of DaVita citizens that are rooting for you, and hope you are rooting for them as well. About 3050 are direct teammates, including 16 from outside the US. The rest are family and friends. Tis a good group!
I started my day at the same time, 6:15. This time I went straight into the bedroom gym. 25 strong minutes on the bike, then I moved the resistance up to a new high. Afterwards, I did my shoulder PT, and a little bit of knee PT. After that I hit the computer for 30 minutes of email. To finish up, I had to go to the PT for a live session, which was 45 minutes of healthy activity and therapy (60 minutes total, but only 45 were active), so Village Vitality, please rack up those minutes on top of the 37 minutes I had at home. The session was a bit of a bummer because I tried some push-ups for the first time since my injection, and the old pain came back. Oh well, let’s hope I just need to get some more PT done first.
Into the Casa I went. We had a good town hall today, probably about 500 of our Casa inhabitants. I also had a strategy session, the beginning of our prep for the annual strategy review with the Board of Directors in mid-July. The day also included a good-bye call to a longstanding field nurse, who has been here since before me and is a wonderful DaVita citizen … As well as a good-bye visit to one of our attorneys who has taken a bigger job in a much smaller company. Both good folks, it felt good to thank them for their many years of good service. The rest of the day was meetings, although once again, I had the pleasure of a 30 minute unscheduled gap to do some work on my own – wow, that feels special.
I also went a second day in a row without a diet coke, probably the first time I have done two week-days in a row in over a year.
A woman named Colette said “I had a wonderful life. I only wished I’d realized that sooner.”
Let’s all remember the good things in our lives, and in our shared journey. If you missed something today, just shrug it off and start anew tomorrow. We are with you!
One for all, KT

It’s great that MTM occured wright when I realized I neede to make some big changes. My second went well and I have a load more energy today.
Love the comment about realizing how wonderful our lives are – you just have to look around to see it.
take care of the shoulder and don’t push it – one of the areas that need TLC and time to heal properly!

Good grief! If the mayor can get a workout in with his busy schedule, I figure I should certainly be able to do the same. KT, MTM is just what I needed. I participated last year and really enjoyed the sense of accomplishment but knew I could do better. I declared 2013 the year that I would make positive differences in my own life instead of just the lives of our patients. I think I tend to put so much focus on caring for others (patients and family) that I either don’t take the time or don’t have the energy to take care of myself. I have since developed a workout routine, quit smoking, and changed to a healthier diet. I too have vowed to reduce my Diet Coke intake (so difficult) and replace it with water (boring). I’m a “scenery gal” and have so much appreciation for the beautiful areas in the world. So the gift of the virtual tour is great incentive for me (although a live tour would be even better). Thanks for the fun and the motivation! Good luck!

Congrats KT on your two day fast from diet-coke! I have gone a whopping 4 days without consuming any liquids that include sugar…yup I’ve been drinking only water. That’s great progress for me, considering I’m an absolute juice lover! This is my first MTM participation since I’ve been with DVA and so I’m very excited about the journey and the life change we’ve all chose to make.
Happy Ola Ala! 🙂

I understand the difficulty in giving up the diet soda. After one of our insurance screenings I was found to have a ever so slightly elevated blood sugar so I gave up the soda and began eating ONLY healthy. I have lost 87 pounds and have not had a soda (diet or otherwise) since Feb. 2012. I feel a lot better and am doing the Tour DaVita this year!!! Good luck keeping off the Diet Coke!!!!!

HooWhee! Great job, KT, for avoiding the Soda Tox(in). I don’t drink the stuff myself, but I reckon I oughtta reconsider the effects of “Sweet Tea” on my chemistry ( it’s a popular drink in this part of Texas). I’m inspired to have “water only” with my raw food diet. I know I can discipline myself to do so for the rest of the 6 weeks.
Don’t be discouraged about the pushups and that shoulder: it’s a good day when your injured body gives you what it can for the moment.
Tomorrow, though, try one more push-up for me and our teammates.:)

Thanks so much for the opportunity to participate in this experience!
This is my first MTM, and I am truly excited to take part in this adventure. Joining the MTM is part of a larger goal I had made for myself, which is to be at a healthy weight by the time I am 40 next June. I’ve lost 13lbs already, and am hoping to lose another 10lbs by the end of this program! This is already looking like a great chance for me to get and stay active!

Great work Juanita! I refer to sugar as “THE WHITE DEATH.”
