Yo DaVita!
Day One of MTM VI !! I hope you did well, and took a step towards your personal health improvement goals today.
Please step back a moment and picture this – you were not acting alone. There were already over 2000 DaVita teammates, family members and friends who were with you in spirit. Just picture 2000 of us, shoulder to shoulder, crossing the field of life as a team. Each of us is hoping for a successful Match the Mayor Campaign.
There were also over 3700 page views as of mid-day Monday. How cool is that?
I started my day at 6:15, with about 30 minutes of emails. Then I headed to my simple home gym (a converted bedroom). I did 25 good minutes on the lifecycle, the first half listening to voicemails, the second half reading a Business Week magazine, except for the last few minutes, where I did 3 cardio intervals. Then I did some physical therapy on my shoulder (I have some micro-tears in my labrum. They did an ultrasound guided steroid injection about a week ago, pretty bizarre to be looking at a TV screen 15 inches from your face and see a needle going an inch and a half into your shoulder and feeling the eerie/very uncomfortable pressure as they pushed against the ligaments, etc.) and some other stretches, including some for my compromised knee where they took out a lot of the cartilage 5 years ago. Getting old has its issues! Anyway, a total of 38 minutes.
But yet we persevere! I am happy I can still bike and hike and run(sort of run, that is … more of a jog at this point)!
I weighed in at 194.0 this A.M. – so I am going to slightly adjust my goal to an even 10 pounds, at 184. I have never lost that much during an MTM. I will need to picture all 2000 of you looking over my shoulder and wagging your fingers if I am to make it …as well as needing to “hear” the applause of all 2000 of you each day I make proportionate progress.
On the good news front, I had zero diet cokes today (I will use that label instead of “caffeinated diet drinks” since diet coke is usually the culprit). That is the first day I have done that in awhile, and it only happened because of MTM, as I did not get to sleep until a little after 1 am.
My day was filled with meetings, as always, although there was one unscheduled 30 minute stretch! The meetings were about some DVU (DaVita University) stuff, some business development, some government policy reviews, and things like that. I was home by 7 pm, which is unusual but I had a therapist there to work on a leg injury so I hopefully can get some strong workouts in this weekend (writing this note is making me feel like a train wreck!). The therapy was 7 to 8, more email from 8 to 9. Now dinner (no dessert tonight!), then a bit more email and then to bed.
Today is the first day of the rest of our lives. And day by day we create our own destiny.
Your mayor, yours in service, KT

This is going to help me get in shape for the Tour DaVita, I hope I am ready for this.
The biggest problems for me is diet so I will need all the encouraging tips I can get.
I only hope when all of this is over I will continue.
Your notes are encouraging.

Thanks KT for getting us all motivated to improve our physical activity. I have joined MTM each year and continue to improve my health. I don’t wait for MTM but for some reason, MTM helps me to push myself a little more.

Wow! This is my first time doing MTM, how inspiring to read about our Mayor hitting the gym! Thanks for all the inspiration need to address the Mt. Dew issue myself!

Together we can do it. My goal is 10 lbs also. I walked yesterday with the dog. Got in over 5,000 steps but tonight I want to go for 10,000. When we get back from Revolution I will start back up with Yoga and Pilates.

Busy busy day, but where there is a will, there is a way to get a workout done. Especially knowing that you have damage to your shoulder and knee and still get workouts done…. Wow that is motivation for the rest of us that are physically well but just to lazy to put that extra effort to exercise. I know we all work hard but the extra physical workout personally energizes me. I hope others that read your journal follow your example as I have. Best of luck with that shoulder.

Just the thing to kick off my own weight loss and physical improvement – MOVEMENT! My labs came back 31 MAY 13 and were disgusting so I jumped on board. My goal is 21 lbs and lost three yesterday. I already feel better thanks to a change in dioet and this program to get me MOTIVATED!

I am a new and enthusiastic Davita employee(acquired acute unit)! I joined for the added inspiration and to provide inspiration. I am almost 66 and want to run my 10th marathon to re-qualify for Boston. Reading others’ stories will help us all! Keep it up KT- it’s definitely worth it to keep you feeling great!

I remember last year thinking I wish I could just lose down to your “Fat” weight so I started 30 minutes Every day of exercise. by the end I averaged about an hour a day during the mtm, but seemed to forget being motivated as I didn’t lose but a couple of pounds. I felt better, but did not really see results that were dramatic enough to motivate me. This year I have changed What, and how much I eat, and have already seen 22 lbs come off. I still have a couple bags of potatoes to go, but wow, that really feels great! This Hawaii campaign makes me want to tone up for a vacation to one of the islands, and I want to be looking good for that!
So, my personal challenge is to add excercises for more toning as i lose weight. Thanks for Re-inspiring our DaVita communities and for challenging us to Do better to Feel better!

This is my first MTM and I’m enjoying the challenge. The first thing I discovered is that I don’t feel like a Spring Chicken anymore, BUT I am committed to keeping this body in motion and will schedule added stretching time to alleviate my stiff back.
