From KT – June 5, 2012
Dear DaVita-Land,
First, stop and savor the fact that you are now a part of a team of 2,960 from across the globe! Including 14 Village citizens from other nations and 223 friends and family – including two of my siblings.
Second, remember that we are partners in health – doing this as a way of encouraging each other to take some incremental step for better health. Remember one of my favorite Buddhist sayings “One Cannot Pour from an Empty Cup.” You cannot give what you do not have. So please re-fill your cup by achieving your Match the Mayor goal, whether that is minutes of exercise, weight loss, fruit/vegetable servings, reading, or whatever.
As to little old me, I did 27 medium intensity minutes on the lifecycle this am – I hate having to stay at medium levels, but until the hamstring is healed that is my lot. I did 2 sets of curls (17×20 and 10×20), one set of 41 push-ups, and 4 minutes of stretching. Total of 37 minutes.
Also I am hoping I can take another 30 minutes credit for the painful and time-consuming 2nd deep tissue massage I got last night. believe me I would prefer not to go thru those. I can’t even do voicemail or email at the same time.
On the job front, I worked until 7:30, then did massage. After that ate quick and reasonably healthy dinner, then did email until about 10:30, with a call to Denise my wife in between, as she is in California.
Today is the normal back-to back meetings that started with being on the phone at 8 am, after my workout. At 6:30 tonight I will attend and talk to a DWOT session (DaVita Way of Team), which I think will have about 40 Village citizens in attendance from across the country. We will talk about leadership and creating value-based teams. I am a most imperfect practitioner but a most serious student of these topics, and so I hope to help others become much better than me! After that session I will either have a business dinner with a small DaVita group, or eat by myself and try to respond to some of my Journal comments.
Oops, final MTM tidbit … I had a healthy shredded wheat with a little honey-nut cheerios breakfast again. My lunch will be chicken and beets. As to dinner, time will tell ….
I wish success for each of you today!!
One for All, KT

Great job K.T. – Hello village teammates and village family and friends. Wake up alert was 5:25 am this morning. I rolled out of bed after only another 7 minutes of fighting to get up. Headed to the fitness center which fortunatley is right within the townhome community where I live. I climbed on the eliptical and did 30 minutes at a high intensity, which allowed me to burn 309 calories. I enjoyed some Mary J. Blige on my IPod and then shifted cario to weight training. I worked shoulders and triceps with hamstring heel raises in between each set. My goal is to lose 10 lbs. I enjoyed some Special K with banana, with skim milk for breakfast along with my carmel drizzle K-cup coffee which was delicious black. Had a bowl of fresh strawberries and pineapple slices as a morning snack. 2 hot dogs and a cup of baked beans for lunch – definitely have to work on increasing my waer intake daily -only 1 glass today. Have a great day! Grea

Hi, you are really motivated. I am at home recovering from surgery and I am at such a beginner’s level. I used to be in so much better shape but now I must start with baby steps. It is difficult. I get tired really easily, but I am motivated to get my strength back so I can get back to work! Good luck to you and all participants.

I am doing a total body work out and I did 75 push ups last night, 30 biceps, 30 triceps, 20 sit ups and 70 squats (variety). I had gumbo soup with rice for lunch and gumbo without rice for dinner and oatmeal and a banana for breakfast, a hot cup of milk and two cookies for a snak. I had 8 cups of water. Yesterday and Monday were good days.

I’m using MTMV to help train for my first Tour DaVita!! It’s easy to keep up the good fight knowing my teammates are right there with me – thank you for the encouragement! This morning up at 5:45 for a 6AM spinning class. In to work for a longer than usual day as we have the Government Affairs state team with us in DC. Our longer day will be repaid with a dinner together and bowling which I intend to add to my daily exercise count. Picked fresh peas and green beans from the garden…tomatoes and cucumbers are coming along and had my first red raspberry of the season. Blackberries will be a bumper crop this year so I’m looking forward to eating fresh and colorful meals!

Awesome job K.T. I am happy to report that I have lost 2 pounds since beginning my journey. I am beginning to feel a renewed sense of energy thoughout the day and now able to unwind from the stressors of management. I am doing cardio and weight resistance on MWF and cardio only on TTS. Some days I have to really push myself, especially during travel times at work. It sometimes feels that I am walking the green mile to the workout center at the hotel. 🙂 Plan to also have chicken for lunch today but I will leave the beets to K.T. Keep up the great work everyone!

Hi There All,
How is your week going? I hope you don’t get bored with my messages but if you understood that 3 years ago I could not walk 1/2 of mile. I had kidney problems, heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. One day I just got tired of it and started my journey. I have lost 126 lbs and the best thing of all I no longer have any of those co-morbid diseases..I mean nothing, I feel as if I have been given a 2nd lease on life and I am taking advantage of it. I still have 25 lbs to go but I am so determined to do it I will not let anything stop me.
Yesterday I set out to do some running, my goal was to run 3 miles. I started from my house & planned to run to beachside. However half way through it began to rain & rain. I wasn’t able to run my 3 miles but I was “Bound & Determined” I ran 2 miles and walked 3 more in the rain, I broke my own record of a total of 5 miles. I had so much fun walking in the rain. I also ate very well, my goal is to drink at least 90 ozs of water a day, and needless to say I did most of it the latter part of the day…not a good idea when you are sleeping. I also introduce my husband to protien shakes, its my treat in the evening after I workout. He was not a big fan of it…LOL. Well enough of me, tell me how is your week going.

Hello Village,
Great Job KT – squeezing in that exercise is helping me as well! Yesterday I walked to the stores I needed to go to and logged 1 mile. Then I carried the stuff home and it was not light. I’m hoping to increase my weight loss by increasing my exercise. You are all helping me with your posts so keep on posting!

Hi everyone, I am enjoying the inspiring messages I get here as I recover at home from my surgery!! I get stronger every day. When the sun warms up the back yard I get a little bit of energy from that– I really need the vitamin D, and I play fetch with my dogs. Keep up the great work everyone, and I enjoy reading everyone’s stories.

This is the first week for my schedule to run my first marathon. I have run most of my life with sports and such but never attempted 26 miles in a row… A couple of 13.1’s but that is all. My little sister who has had 3 babies is half way there so I need to catch up!
Love to see the posts, keep ’em comin’

I am walking my dogs as my 35 mins a day exercise and they are very happy with my new daily fitness goals! I have much better behaved less rowdy dogs, and I feel good knowing that I’ve logged the time to my better health. Thanks for sponsoring this program.

Hey KT, my FA always says what an inspiring guy you are, and if you can keep up what you’re doing with all that you have to deal with I guess I can at least manage a 30 minute walk daily! I too started out the Adventure with an injury to my shoulder which is keeping me off the bike for now. MRI tomorrow, and if everything is okay I will be dusting off the bike to enjoy our brief Wisconsin summer.

Worked out last night -5 3min. rounds on the heavy bag-5 3 min rounds mitt work, walked for 20 mins and did leg work and abs to finish the evening-went home and slept really well! I’ve lost about 2 lbs from last week-right now I have to get my sweet tooth under control. I like to bake and usually supply my friends and family with chocolate chip cookies but they have been told that until I lose this last 20lbs no more cookies! too tempting not to eat a fresh cookie hot out of the oven. I’ve got to find alternatives to keep the cookie monster under control…Have a great day everyone!!!

Good morning everyone! I have really enjoyed reading everyone’s comments throughout the week. Your lives are much busier than mine. I’ve come to a more simple way of life – Of course I go to work each morning and put in whatever hours the day/job takes, but afterward, I find myself (usually) hiking in the woods with my dog. Nature has a way of draining all the stress from my body, and I allow that – seek it even. As for MTM – The woods as its own “mini boot camp course”. I probably look like a freak running/climbing/falling up and down ravines climbing over the biggest felled trees – climbing trees, ect. I get home exhausted, filthy and spent! I try this 3 three times a week with more traditional activities the rest of the time.
@ Maggie Lopez – your words inspire me. No need to apologize for your posts – I am sure other find the same uplifting feeling following your journey as I have.
Take care everyone!!
