From KT – July 29
Dear DaVitans,
Yikes!
Sorry for the break in the blogs, but the Board of Directors was in town and we go from breakfast to bedtime each day, so I have done virtually zero emails since they arrived.
Let me quickly cover yesterday, and I will subsequently go back and fill the gap – but I have to go fast so I can get in a 60 minute exercise session right now before my meetings start.
efore I do that, however, I am excited to announce there are now over 1950 of us who have joined hands and locked arms in a nationwide life improvement campaign! Let’s do it fellow teammates and citizens of DaVita-land !!!!
And also before I do that, it is time for me to stop shying away from a weight loss goal. I want to lose 5 pounds by the end of MTM IV. I weigh myself first thing in the morning, on the same scale, so I have a good sense of accuracy. I am currently 192.4. I have been having way too many desserts, too often telling myself I “deserved” that reward after a 13 or 14 hour day – but it is not a reward, it is raising my tryglicerides, my HB1ac, and my weight. Enough is enough. I have been at this weight level for 2-3 years, and it is time to make a break. MTM LIVES!
Now, on to yesterday, which is a funny phrase. The Board stuff started at 8 am, and went until 4 pm. Then we had a break of a couple hours, so I scooted out with Mike Staffieri and we did a 70 minute bike ride. 55 of those minutes was uphill, a total of 2131 feet of ascent over 6.1 miles. So it is a good workout. He is training for a tough, high altitude 100 mile mountain biking race and has lost 30 pounds in training for it – so he literally rode a mountain bike while I rode a road-bike, which is much easier. Amazing. I also did 2 minutes of stretching.
On the healthy eating front, I did not eat my healthy breakfast. I did have salmon at lunch, with one serving of veggies. And I had a serving of green beans at dinner. So only a 2 score on the healthy eating front.
I am glad to be back in contact with the Team of 1800, and will send out some responses to your team messages tomorrow, on Saturday. DAVITA NATION, LET’S DO IT TOGETHER.

Pamela Brule, MINNEAPOLIS, MNAchievements so far: boosted fruit/vegetable nutrition, reduced carbs & fat, boosted cardio and strength training, and lost 4lbs since we started 7/18 – oh – and learned (re-learned) how to hula hoop!!!! Nice work, everyone!
KT- Dear Pamela – I am intensely jealous of people who can do the hula hoop. And congrats on the multi-pronged progress! Kt
Esther Torres We are having fun every time one of us said something to remember to do our exercise and to eat healthy!!! It is fun all together watching for each other!!!! I love u girls!!!!
KT- Dear Esther … what about us boys? kt
Shaunita Bolden, TACOMA, WAHappy trails teammates as we move closer to our goals. Wishing yall all luck throughout the weekend.
KT- Yo Shaunita, Happy Trails back at you! KT
Marisol Avila, YUCAIPA, CATrying to learn to ZUMBA! I think I have two left feet 🙂
KT- Dear Marisol – what is zumba? I am so out of it ….. KT
Lynnette Kettlewell, TACOMA, WAWent to a church function last night, and was very proud of myself for passing on the starchy foods and only eating salad and didn’t drink any soda but only water! I did splurge and eat a cupcake, but they were homemade and calling my name! 🙂
KT- Greetings Lynnette, sometimes when your name is called you must answer. And if you do a lot of good stuff, a treat is just fine. I still have 1-2 diet sodas each day, I need to work on that too. Beautiful clouds we are flying through right now … but quite bumpy! KT
Jennifer Brewer, DENVER, CODecided to hit the gym hard yesterday after a long day at the office. Working out does seem to relieve a lot of the stress I can feel throughout the day. I thought about work for the first 20-30 minutes and then relaxed and got into a good groove with my routine. Today the gym is closing early so I need to get down there early to get my sweat on. SYOY
KT- Yo Jennifer, what is syoy? Happy Trails, I hope you got to the gym in time. Perhaps a little home routine as a backup? KT
Luz Cirino, SAN JUAN, PRHello everybody…..I am glad my coworkers are helping me with a great health…. I am pregnant and due on mid September…. It is a little hard to do exercise but walking to lunch and back to the office 15 minutes a day is working for me, I feel great and the baby is more awake than ever…….Thanks girls!!!!
KT- Dear Luz, that sounds like a great routine for your pregnancy – all the best! KT
Keri Ahrendt, PIPESTONE, MNThanks for all of the positive stories & comments on here, they keep us going. Together Everyone achieves more right? My friend and I found out that you can indeed circle a tennis court for 45 minutes and manage to accomplish a 2 mile walk while your daughters are having tennis lessons!
KT- Dear Keri, I love this story. The fact is there are hundreds of ideas like this where one can add exercise to your life without chewing up huge blocks of time (remember the Four Pillars, cardio, balance, flexiblity, and strength) or reduce bad behaviors. Well done! KT
Megan Kemp, TACOMA, WAYesterday Team Evergreen went to the Tacoma Rainiers (Triple-A) baseball game for the day. In the afternoon my fellow trainer, Jana, and our manager, Kristin, and I went to Chambers Bay (trail through a golf course with steep hills on both ends of the trail) and walked the course twice. That was one of my Health Trails goals. I discovered on that six-plus-mile-walk that I need new running shoes.
KT- Dear Megan – solid equipment is important … on top of your discipline, congrats! KT
Kelly Frye, JACKSON, TNJolie and I went to a Heart Awareness Zumba class at Jackson State Community College. They raised $205.00 for American Heart Association. I must say it was hot in the gym and I thought at one point I would need to use them, ha. I am at a standstill right now with my weight lost, but I have lost 7lbs. I am tired today, so if I do workout it will be light and not as long! Best wished to all my DaVita family out there.
KT- Yo Kelly, well sounds like I am one of the few who don’t know about Zumba. No doubt I will soon. I hope you got in a light one. KT
