Greetings to the Good People of DaVita-Land!
People Services told me it is that time of the year again …. That’s right, Match the Mayor time!
Last year we had over 900 teammates join hands to help each other find the way to work on establishing or improving a healthy habit. Exercise, reading, changed eating, quiet time … your resolution/goal can fall into any of those categories.
I am still thinking about mine. But I do know it will include a goal of at least 210 minutes of exercise per week, so I can complete the Route 66 trip in the 60 days available.
This morning I did 35 minutes. 22 minutes on the life-cycle, as I listened to DaVita voicemail messages. Then a few sets of weights and several minutes of stretching, hence the 35.
Oh what the heck, I should also include a weight goal. I am down from a year ago, in part the result of the momentum created by Match the Mayor of 2009. My weight this morning, right after getting up which is my normal time for checking my weight, was 187.6. I want to get down to 183 by the end of MM.
Yesterday was a great day for me – I did a Town Hall at the Lodge (which is the name of one of our large Denver neighborhoods, about 280 teammates), and a bunch of folks asked very good questions. I then delivered cookies and fruit for awhile – which is something I do periodically, but this time was a bit awkward for part of the time because a film crew was following me around. There is a big company called Taleo, and DaVita is one of the finalists for a cool award, and they flew people out to film some DaVita Village stuff. Fun!
Anyway, the rest of yesterday was meetings. I left the office at 7:45, had a late dinner with Luis Borgen our new CFO (I ate and he talked, since he had already had dinner with his wife and cute daughter Isabella), and got home about 10 pm.
Today will be a bunch of meetings and then I will catch a 6:30 plane to California for meetings there tomorrow.
To newbies, Welcome to Match the Mayor! To those who joined last year, Welcome Back, let’s do some good stuff together again!
One for All,
KT

Thanks for the welcome, KT! I have participated in the previous 2 MMs and last year lost 35 pounds before, during, and after MM2. I am still running 3 days per week and dancing (swing and salsa mostly, 4 hours at a time!) 2 nights per week. No races longer than 8K so far, but I will follow the Mayor along Rt 66 this year just as another motivator to keep track of my activity and keep on schedule!

I walk from my apartment each morning 1.3 miles to work at DaVita and back home again. When I get home I take my dog Newman for a walk to a beautiful park about 1/4 mile from my apartment and he runs around while I walk the walkway and back home. We do this routine Monday thru Friday. Saturday and Sunday always involves some kind of exercise but don’t usually count how much we walk because we change it up so much. I also want to thank you for this program, I joined last year and enjoyed it so much that I joined again this year and look forward to many more Match the Mayor challenges! All for One!

Wow great job K.T. I am in training for Tour DaVita. I jogged 2 miles this morning and cycled 10 miles. Then off to DaVita as FA to get stuff done. My mine works so much better after a workout. I can’t wait until tour Davita in about 2.5 weeks! Me and my husbands first tour and we are training like crazy!

Good job Mayor and to all! You can do it! I did weight training this morning along w/cardio to the exercise DVD’s and walked 20 minutes during lunch. It’s a little warm here in the Valley of the Sun but at least it’s not 112 like is was a couple of weeks ago. It has cooled down to about 105 or so..down right chilly for this time of year! Thank you for doing this program again. It is a motivator and the blogs and responses are great!

Thanks KT for the warm welcome and boost to get us all going. This is my first Match the Mayor however have been going to the gym now since the first of Dec 2009. I have lost 65 lbs so far and this will help keep me going along with my personal trainer. Being active doesn’t always have to be hard work, it can be fun too but then I think working out with my trainer and doing muscle burnout is fun. Thanks again DaVita for looking out for our health and putting the fun in all we do.

This challenge will put a little extra spring in my KAT Walk step. Looking forward to the Chicago 9/11 KAT Walk. Great cause, great teammates and family to walk with!
Hope we win that cool Taleo award!

Thank you so much for this challenge! This is my first MM – I just started working for DaVita in March. I have been trying for about five months now to lose weight & eat right as I am diabetic and more than 100 pounds overweight. I have lost 25lb so far. This is the motivation I needed to keep me going and I am so excited! Good luck Mr. Mayor and all my DaVita TM’s. You ROCK!

Thank you for participating with us in getting in shape. And it’s so nice meeting the rest of you!! I love the fact we can be each others support.
I live in Arizona where it can get hot hot hot, I use the treadmill a lot. On the weekends, I go outside and walk around Tempe Town Lake or to mix it up a bit, I’ll walk in one of our malls and walk. There I can go up and down the stairs and walk around. My favorite is Scottsdale Fashion Square- if you do all the floors and stairs it’s over 2 miles. It keeps me motivated in losing weight seeing all the clothes in the windows.
Nice meeting you all and have a great day!!

Thanks once again, KT, for taking the time to challenge all of us! I enjoy reading your encouraging and uplifting journal. I have several walking partners on my team and we love to walk down to the water in Tacoma on our lunch hour. The route that we walk is about 1.4 miles. We are encouraging each other to walk faster, use our arms for a better workout and, of course, eat better too. Match the Mayor is definitely a good motivator.
I am from the Tacoma Team Evergreen office and all of us are looking forward to having all the riders here for the Tour DaVita. How exciting!

Thanks KT for creating an atmosphere for success both professional and personal. I will use this opportunity to become the best I can be. I am encouraged by your challenge and all the tools given by Village Vitality to be successful. This is my first time and I am excited about the pounds I plan to shed. Today is the start of a life changing era for me.

Thanks KT for having this challenge. This is my first MM. I recently had gastric bypass surgery and have lost 63lbs so far. My exercise has been off and on and this is just the motivation that I need to exercise on a regular basis. I am excited about this and hope to do Tour Davita next year.
Good luck to all of the Village.

Thank you KT for continuing to offer the MM each year. I have been with Davita for 7 years and I think this is a great program. My goals are to increase my exercise and to continue to lose weight. I am more than 100 lbs overweight but have lost 33 pounds since January. I have hit a plateau and I am looking forward to getting back on track and re-motivated with this program. My goal is to be able to participate in the Tour Davita within 2 years.

Dear Cari,
Thank you so much for doing the Kat Walk, and my thanks are on behalf of millions of Americans with kidney issues that they are not even aware of – but with our Kat Walks and the Tour DaVita and the Kidney Trust, we are making a difference.
Please let the other teammates know what the Taleo award is about – perhaps you know this already, but they paid DaVita a huge compliment already by asking me to come and speak before 500 human resource executives from across America, because they are so impressed by our little Village and how wonderful so many of our teams and teammates are.

Dear Dawn,
25 pounds, that’s GREAT. You are doing much better than your Mayor, but I am not giving up. It will be fun to see how your lab values improve as you drop those pounds. Take care, not too fast.

Dear Deb,
Well that’s one form of exercise I have never tried – Mall walking. Perhaps one day it will become an Olympic sport! Seriously I know how hot it gets In Arizona, so your idea is so sensible I love it.

Dear Sharon,
I think you guys are the one who have created the right atmosphere – my job is to be a good mirror to reflect back to all of you how special so many of you are. Are you keeping up your new regimen so far? If so, congrats! If not, start again! We are rooting for you, we are here for you.

Dear Georgia,
Wow. There are some real star entries in this batch. Any bad effects from the surgery? It is so good that you are not just relying on that, but that you are also going to give your body the gift of exercise. It deserves it!

Dear Mary Ann,
After 33 pounds you can afford to sit on a plateau for a bit! But welcome to the team, and getting back on the amazing trajectory you were on. Remember, anyone can do the Tour, because it is NOT required nor expected that people ride every mile – rather all we expect is that people ride as far as they can. That is what life is all about, doing our best. For each other, for ourselves.

Hi KT, No I have not had any bad effects from the surgery, just good ones. My blood pressure is now perfect as well as my cholesterol. I am not longer pre-diabetic and over all I just feel so much better. Yes my body does deserve the exercise and despite the sore muscles it is defenitly benefitting from it. My goal as I have stated before is to do Tour Davita next year and I have every confidence that I will make that goal.

Hi KT, I added healthy snacks and meals to my goal and portion control along with my walking (still not up to a mile but working on it)and since the 1st I have lost 7 more pounds. I am 8 lbs away from the thinnest I have been in 5 years, which is still a little over 100 lbs overweight, and then I continue to hit weights I have not been at in over 25 years. I was able to get another teammate to sign up for MM and the support has been a great help. I will keep in mind about not having to complete every mile. This year 5 teammates from our Region are participating in Tour Davita. We have 6 facilities in our Region so that is quite a few, last year 3 participated. I look forward to seeing all the great Tour Davita pictures next week.
