Nutrition Facts Label Update Postponed by FDA
In February 2018, I wrote a blog post about the upcoming changes to the over 20 year old nutrition facts label. You can read it here. The nutrition facts label is being updated to provide consumers with the ability to make more informed decisions, with a greater emphasis on calorie content and serving size. Added sugars will be required on the label in addition to nutrients that are under consumed, such as potassium.
Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made an announcement that they are extending the compliance dates by approximately 1.5 years. According to the FDA, they are extending the time frame to comply for several reasons. One reason is to allow food companies and the FDA to address technical questions regarding the new label. Additionally, more time will allow companies to complete and print the updated nutrition facts labels for products.
For companies with 10 million or more in sales per year, the new date to comply is January 1st, 2020 (original date was July 26, 2018). For companies with less than 10 million in food sales per year, the new date to comply is January 1st, 2021 (original date was July 26, 2019).
What are your thoughts on the new compliance dates? Thoughts on the new label?
