Healthy Halloween Tips for Kidney Diets

Halloween and healthy are not  often paired, but a new mindset around food and health has prompted families and food professionals  to focus on ways to make our everyday and holiday habits healthier.

Food Day, described as ” a nationwide celebration and a movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food” was observed for the second year across America on October 24th. This celebration kickoff is an opportunity to focus on healthy eating, beginning with this week’s Halloween festivities. One of the resources provided on the Food Day website is a handout packed full of ideas for healthy Halloween treats. I really love the fun foods included on this year’s handout. To assist with your kidney diet I have analyzed 3 of the  fun foods that I consider kidney-friendly. Apple Bites (1 each): 38 calories, 0.5 g protein, 5 g carbohydrate, 1.5 g fat, 0 mg sodium, 61 mg potassium, 18 mg phosphorus, 1.3 g fiber

Goblin Grins (1 each):  20 calories, 0.7 g protein, 1 g carbohydrate, 1 g fat, 1 mg sodium, 45 mg potassium, 18 mg phosphorus, 0.6 g fiber

Edible Eyeballs (2 each):  30 calories, 0.5 g protein, 2 g carbohydrate, 2 g fat, 60 mg sodium, 84 mg potassium, 14 mg phosphorus, 0.8 g fiber
