Yo DaVitans !
I hope you are all well, and hitting your goals for minutes of exercise! We are all in this together.
I already reported my medium intensity exercise of 25 minutes on Monday am. My foot continued to give me quite a bit of trouble, unusally so even for when my chronically termpermantal achilles tendon is discombobulated. One thing that always impresses me when I have to walk very slowly. It gives you alot of time to think about what you are doing, to be fully “present” in the Buddhist sense.
Since I only got about 4-5 hours sleep on Sunday night, Monday was a bad diet coke day as I sat in meetings all day and then did email on the plane. 3 of those bad boys.
I did eat reasonably well, until I had buttered popcorn in substantial quantity at 10 pm that night, as I watched part of the Packers game which had been tivo’d on sunday. It was wonderful!
But the foot caused me significant pain again on Monday night. I literally almost crawled to the bathroom at 1 am to take 600 mgs of ibuprofen to cut the pain enough to allow some sleep. I took some more about 4 am. Like Monday, I woke up before the alarm went off, quite unusual for me, but the foot was sounding it’s own alarms.
Fortunately my son had an appt with an orthopedic surgeon at 8:15 Tuesday morning. I joined him. The doc was not sure what was wrong — some of the normal symptoms of my achilles problem were not in appearance. He put me in a boot. I had to cancel my business trip, it would have involved too much walking around. My apologies to the billing/collecting and legal teams, I was goin to do town hall meetings for each of them as parts of the trip. darn. I have an MRI tomorrow, on Wednesday, to see what is going on under the swelling.
Given the big opening in my schedule, I did get a tremendous amount of desk work done, with my foot propped up in various and sundry uncomfortable ways. So a pretty good silver lining in this cloud!
As to the MM II goals, when I told my wife I was going to do a carefully controlled workout, isolating the foot to keep it in one position and therefore not stress it, she almost took my head off. So no workout on Tuesday. Although just walking around is a bit of a workout with this boot on.
I did only have one diet coke, and it appears I am still down 1 pound or so, that is what the scale is consistently saying. I believe I heard the doctor recommend vanilla ice cream as part of the recovery plan, so I did have some of that before gimping off to bed. as Mary Poppins sang “a spoonful of ice cream helps the advil go down”.
Life’s rich pageant.
Take Care,
KT

My biggest obstacle is keeping motivated. In addition to a full work-week, I am a full time student. I’ve been trying to “sneak in” exercise on lunch and breaks, but it’s tough to reach my goal of a full hour of exercise daily. I am confident that by the end of the year, I’ll get there.
In an effort to keep up the training momentum from Tour DaVita, a group of teammates at Palms North has signed up for the “Horrible Hundred,” a bike ride in Central Florida. I’m opting for the 35 mile because all that I have at home is a heavy mountain bike (which has had to endure me cursing at it for not being as light and pretty as the backroad’s bikes.)

sorry to hear about your foot, I hope it heals soon. I just want to share a little about how my progress is coming along. I had a personal victory on Sunday as I dove into swimming laps for the first time in approximately 10 years. In my previous life I did a sprint distance triathlon and loved it. Then during grad school my elective classes were swimming and tennis and I had a lot of fun improving on some talents I didn’t know existed in me. Since then I’ve started a career, gotten married, and had a baby; fitness has really become a lesser priority. I had some anxiety about going, but off to the pool I went in my new suit, cap, and goggles. It was like riding a bike, easier than I remembered and much more enjoyable, too! I can’t wait to do it again! The scale isn’t moving much, but I feel better as I’m increasing my minutes and intensity of physical activity each week.
good luck to you and the other participants!
All for one,
Brenda

I have always enjoyed (and been intimidated by) reading KT’s health journals here. I thought I would share my story (so far) to join in the comaradarie of encouraging each other along.
I started my fitness kick about a month ago, so I was happy to see the MM2 come along soon after- good timing! I had joined a site with a couple of friends which allows me to track all of my food and fitness intake so I can track my progress.
Food is becoming more and more complicated for me. I have been vegetarian for about 1 1/2 years, and I just recently learned that I have mild allergies to dairy and wheat, so cutting those out will be tricky! I love to cook, so I’ll look at it as an adventure.
My goals are to:
-drink at least 64 oz. of water per day (doing great there!)
-exercise at least 30 minutes, 3 days per week (keeping this up, but just barely sometimes!)
-eat less than 1760 calories, >153g carbs, >35g fat, <50g protein, and <25g fiber per day
-lose 20 lbs by December 31st, 2009 and eventually 40 (I have lost 8 so far!)

This is my first blog and I’m super excited to join in. I think it’s just AWESOME that we are doing this! I’ve been getting the word out to the folks in our little neighborhood, so I figure I need to put my exercise and eating habits where my mouth is. So here goes…
First of all I’m so sorry to hear about the foot – I hope things turn up KT. Thanks for setting such a great example for all of us. Jen and Brenda I’m with you on the craze of life threatening to crowd out the care of self. I commend your goal setting and pushing forward – you are truly inspiring as are of all the other teammates doing this!
I started with a small goal of getting out to walk a few times a week as my other physical activities are there but not very scheduled or consistent. With a grade school son I’m “forced” into fun things like biking, swimming pool trips and just recently roller skating (having been out of my roller blades for over ten years that has been interesting but super fun). That said I need more than just these extracurricular fun activities to be really healthy.
So… this week I’ve done two of three walks. I walk longer if I bring my cell and chat with friends, though this can also prevent me from a solid pace/picking up the speed to a light jog. I might ditch the cell when I go out tonight. The challenge will be to keep this up as the Chicago chill hits. The upside is chilly weather means more calories spent as my body works to stay warm!
Diet has been average. I did introduce some crock pot cooked veggies to my lunches/dinners this week as a big goal is to eat more veggies. But I’ve been eating too many candy treats and need to cut back.
I chuckled about those Diet Cokes. I love a good beverage next to my desk while I’m working. My arch diet nemesis is too much cream and sugar in my multiple Starbucks / Caribou / Eight-O’Clock Bean coffees (or perfectly concocted other coffee varieties including my too often consumption of macchiatos and lattes… pumpkin latte mmmm). As a starting point this week I’m doing more milk / less cream with natural sugar instead of the bad table sugar in my coffee. I also stuck with no fancy drinks this week, just regular coffee. Plus I have a new water bottle that I’m keeping at my desk at all times with the healthy stuff in it – H2O!
Oh – about popcorn – that too is a wonderful treat. On an encouraging note we have a movie theatre that sells this heavenly stuff with soybean based trans fat free oil that actually tastes BETTER than regular movie popcorn. Creative alternatives can make tasty treats still an option!

I just signed up today to join the fitness craze. Although I started about 1 month ago exercising and eating somewhat healthier. I have lost a total of 8 pounds but the best part is I already feel better when I am playing softball. Last week I had one of the best games, turning double outs and actually running 2 bases at a time rather than just barely making to first base and then hoping that the batter behind me would not run me over. Any way I look forward to the challange of getting fit and healthier. Thanks Malissa
