Yo DaVita Village,
Well I am back on a plane, for the 6 hour flight from Beijing to India. We raced from meeting to meeting today like every day in the brutal Beijing traffic, and had several good ones, including several hours of discussing potential center opportunities, and one with a former government official. It is fun to experience how many organizations are interested in doing stuff with us, because of the size and reputation you have built!
On the three big dimensions, exercise, healthy food, and weight …. On exercise I am barely holding my own on the flight. On healthy food I am doing solidly. On weight I am doing poorly. On to the detail!
Exercise: Yesterday(Wednesday) was a big zero. You can’t go for a run in downtown Beijing, and we left too early for the airport to use the health club in the morning (it did not open until 6 am, and we had to be in the car at 7) and closed too early to use it in the evening(it closed at 10 pm). Today was better but not great, I got in 20 minutes on the bike, 2 sets of push-ups (40 and 20), and 90 crunches with a little stretching. Total of 29 minutes.
Healthy Food: Wednesday breakfast had 1 serving of fruit and .5 serving of all bran cereal. Lunch had .5 serving of veggies, as well as fish, chicken and beef. Dinner was mainly chicken and rice, so no points. Today’s breakfast had 1 serving of fruit and 1 serving of all bran cereal. Lunch had .5 serving of vegetables, as well as fish. I don’t know about dinner yet.
Weight: Given the light workout schedule and business meals, I am in trouble! These formal Chinese lunches are daunting. The Wednesday lunch was 12 courses, today’s was 10. Even though the portions are small, that really adds up. And in neither case do you get to order what you might want, so if they don’t serve many veggies, so be it that is it. I am also eating bigger dinners than I need to, partly as a way of just doing something pleasant outside of working every minute. I can feel my stomach growing each day!
I am glad that I insisted that today’s and tomorrow’s schedule start late enough so I can get a workout in. This morning I messed up by sitting down “just to do a few emails” before I went to the gym. Before I knew it I had been working 45 minutes, which is why I had to get by with the modest workout described above.
It was interesting to see another Chinese dialysis center yesterday. Very modern, clean, organized. They were using beds instead of chairs, as is the case in many countries. The physicians are employed by the provider, and are there in the center/on the floor all day every day. Most interesting. The government reimbursement ranges from $30 to $45 per treatment. There is very little private insurance in the country.
Enough about me – I am sorry I have not responded to teammate posts for a bit, but I have been working every minute of every day for a bit now. I think I will take a break at some point in this 6 hour flight to respond to some, that will be nice for me. I always get good energy when I read them, and this should help me get up in time for a good workout tomorrow – unfortunately we will not get to the hotel until about 11:30 pm, so it will be a little dicey if I have to spend too much time on the phone with people in America. Perhaps I will be able to do all my necessary calls on the drive in from the airport to the hotel.
I hope you all are doing better than me this week! I won’t be able to weight myself until I am back home.
Thanks to the many of you who were great citizens, teammates and caregivers today, living The DaVita Way … which for so many of you is also your Personal Way.
One for all

Margie Locke WELL boy did I have a ZEN day yesterday took time, never do. My normal 2 mile 30 min fast walk IN and OUT to the reservoir for a dog swim became a 3 mile walk sat with the ferns changing their minds with the wind, enjoy the babbling brook although she goes on and on it was quiet grounding, felt the glorious sunshine guiding my way(because it wasn’t humid) along the way back, rested on the support of a huge rock and rested.
KT – Dear Margie,
Wow. you have me, and probably a lot of others, picturing how glorious that must have been. And wondering when we can do the same. I intend to do it on Monday, the first day of my week off! Zenly yours, KT
Kelly Frye Jackson, TNYeah passed the 300 mile mark wooohooooo!!!!!!!!!!…..I have been to Zumba class three days in a row….I feel so much better!!!
KT – Congrats Kelly!!!!!!!!!! kt
Carol Myers Tacoma, WAI should have picked a turtle instead of the ladybug. I have finally lost 1/2 lb. WWOOOHHOOO Been losing inches, finally some weight. Thank you to all who have sent me encouragement emails. I really appreciate the support.
KT – Congrats Carol! I would take either inches or weight at this point. With this late plane and a missed connection, I don’t know how I will do the exercise thing tomorrow. but will try! KT
LaJuan Battle Atlanta, GANew clothes are great but wearing old clothes again is so much better. I was so excited that I was able to put on an old pair of Levis. I wanted to throw a party!!! It’s been at least five years since I wore these jeans. They hugged my curves and were loose in the waist. Sadly, the jeans actually belong to my son.. a 6’2″ 310 pound offensive line man… Talk about a flag on the play!
KT – Yo LaJuan …. I love the sound of those words .. “hugged my curves and were loose in the waist”. I will try to copy. Kt
Evea Viverette Peachtree City, GAMy one year old had his birthday this weekend! We had a cookout and I made Ka-bobs… homemade with fresh-grown vegetables and hand-cut steak and chicken!
KT – Greetings Evea – and Happy Bday to your little treasure! KT
Lisa Bargas Fresno, CAStarted a new workout routine… 20 min cardio on the bike with intervals of increase speed and tension every 5 mins. and strength training. Really can feel the difference.
KT – Yo Lisa .. .intervals are huge. As is strength stuff. the 4 Pillars are cardio, strength, flexibility, and balance. KT
Pamela Brule Minneapolis, MNWow! Admire how you’re able to keep even a modest workout in that schedule – that leaves no room for the “too busy” excuses on our end, does it?!! Great work! We do a lot of camping/fishing/boating on weekends here in MN, but we’re still getting our activity in by bike-riding the State Park bike trails, swimming in the lakes, and hikes. Weekdays I use the gym. Kudos to our leader!
KT – Yo Pamela! Well the bad news is I am working a lot of hours. The good news is I have some control over protecting some slots for exercise. The other good news is I feel lucky to have the job I do, in the Village I do. all the best, KT
