Video: Promoting the Right Dialysis Therapy at the Right Time

 

It is important to recognize that patients with end stage renal disease are individuals, and that they are choosing the dialysis modality that best suits their needs. Watch this video, in which Martin Schreiber, MD, interviews Mark Shapiro, MD, on how clinically appropriate patients can often benefit from initiating on peritoneal dialysis first, rather than the default treatment (often hemodialysis) and what efforts can help increase the number of patients receiving the right therapy at the right time.

Mark H. Shapiro, MD

Mark H. Shapiro, MD, is assistant clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego; peritoneal dialysis medical director at DaVita San Marcos; and national medical advisor for DaVita’s home dialysis programs. He also serves as a partner and board director for Balboa Nephrology Medical Group and maintains a private practice in Escondido, California. Previously, Dr. Shapiro was the western division peritoneal dialysis medical director for Gambro Healthcare. He was also a member of DaVita’s Physician Council and pharmacy and therapeutics committees for more than 10 years. Dr. Shapiro received an undergraduate degree in microbiology from UCLA, completed medical school at the University of Pittsburgh and completed his internal medicine residency, chief residency and nephrology fellowship at the University of California, San Diego.
