Study findings: Good glucose and blood pressure control saves your kidneys

If you’ve taken a Risk Quiz to determine your risk for kidney disease, you’ve probably already made the connection between kidney disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Many research studies are focused on finding links between these health issues and what makes a difference in preventing long-term complications
of diabetes like kidney disease.

You may be interested in a recent report from the ADVANCE-ON post trial observational study that shows kidney failure is reduced in people with type 2 diabetes who had intensive glucose control. The major headline  “Intensive treatment is likely to produce major long term benefits for the kidneys” is great news to anyone with diabetes who needs encouragement to keep working to maintain good control of glucose and blood pressure. Preserving your kidneys is worth it!

If you are at risk of developing diabetes, or have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, prevention is possible. Recently, Jane Brody’s Personal Health column in the New York Times ran a 2 part series  “Averting Diabetes Before It Takes Hold” and “Beating Back the Risk of Diabetes” with practical actions you can take to stay healthy.
