Memorial Day Gathering Tips
Memorial Day weekend kicks off the start of summer. The hot and sunny days to come mean cookouts, summer socials and potlucks galore. Here are some tips to help you stay on track while enjoying the holiday.
Food Ideas for Memorial Day Gatherings
- Summer brings all the best fruit into season. Some low-potassium options include: berries (blackberries, blueberries, strawberries), grapes, watermelon and pineapple.
- Lower potassium vegetables to choose from include broccoli, carrots, Brussels sprouts, cucumbers, bell peppers and zucchini
- Remember, large portions will change low-potassium foods into a high-potassium serving.
- If you’re concerned about whether or not there will be food that you want to eat or you feel is safe to eat, bring your own dish. Hosts always welcome the help and everyone appreciates extra food. Dishes to bring could include: kabobs (peppers, zucchini, and herbed chicken), mixed berries and whipped cream, or lower potassium roasted vegetables such as cauliflower, carrots and green beans. Fluid Tips
Be wary of the heat if you know you’ll be outside in the sun at a pool party or cookout. Spending time outside in the heat can make you sweat and feel thirsty. If you are on a fluid limit it may be easier to avoid drinking too much fluid if you stay cool. Move towards shaded areas and limit your time while the sun is at its peak. Remember that anything that is liquid at room temperature counts toward your fluid limit (think popsicles, ice cream, shaved ice, and gelatin).
Summer is a time to unwind and relax! Happy Memorial Day!
