Five-Star Works for Those Who Matter Most—Patients

Transparency is reshaping healthcare and empowering consumers in ways many did not think possible just a decade ago. In the dialysis industry, we should do whatever we can to make it easier for patients to select providers based the quality of care they provide. With the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Five-Star Quality Rating System and the public Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS), we can all get closer to what should matter to our patients—both in terms of clinical measures and patient satisfaction. Patients should have a choice—a choice in their physician, provider, location, modality and more. We all need to work with CMS to encourage patient choice around performance and quality. As an industry, we are all responsible for that education.
