The DaVita Health Tour Winds Down Its Sunny California Trip

When planning the 2019 DaVita Health Screening Tour, we looked for locations where we could make an impact on peoples’ lives and health. For our first stop of the week, the Innovations Community Center in Napa, that is the mantra they live by every day.

ICC provides mental health services to under-served communities, promoting healing through healthy living, spiritual practice and social connections. With many of the patients experiencing unemployment and/or living with a disability, mental illness or substance abuse issues, access to medical care can be difficult.

“We are very thankful DaVita took the time to visit today. I am out of work and can’t afford to visit a doctor – thank you guys for coming out to the center today!”

With the issues of poverty and medical access fresh in our minds, we headed to Sacramento for our second stop, the annual California Dialysis Council Legislative Day. The California Dialysis Council (CDC) is a statewide organization that addresses legislative and clinical initiatives that represent the needs of the renal community. Parked beneath the towering palm trees in front of the statehouse, the DaVita bus quickly filled with people seeking free screenings. From legislators to CDC members to passersby, the DaVita Health Screening Tour provided health updates to nearly 100 patients during the event.

“It is really important for everyone to understand their health,” Alexa (Antelope, CA) said. “It’s really imperative to know what foods impact your body. I am currently going through a health event, so it was really beneficial to know where my body is.”

“I think, in general, our society is more sickly than it used to be, and anything you can do to improve your health is going to be beneficial to society in the long run,” said Chris (Sacramento, CA), who was out on a daily walk when he stopped in for a free health screening. “I learned that hypertension and diabetes were two of the leading causes of kidney disease – I’ve never been affected by kidney disease, and I don’t ever want to be!”

13 stops down, and 500 free screenings provided. We’re honored to have made this trip.
