Shining Bright at DaVita

One of my favorite sayings is: “Don’t let anyone dull your sparkle.”

Working for Colorado Springs Health Partners, a DaVita Medical Group for the past six and a half years has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional career. I graduated as a medical assistant from Denver Technical College in 1987 and became the office manager of my first practice after two years. I continued in operations management for 24 years in Denver and Indianapolis, where I had the opportunity to work in family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, endocrinology and surgical specialties. In 2010, I returned to Colorado and began working with Colorado Springs Health Partners, a DaVita Medical Group.

Working in the health care field can be stressful. We often put so much care and effort into our patients and our work, and sometimes this type of work can wear on people. One area I’ve prided myself in throughout my career is trying my best to be a person who can brighten someone’s day and bring good energy.

I love working with people and watching my teammates grow in their careers, so when an opportunity came up four years ago to change directions in my career and work in our People Services Learning and Talent Development department, I was thrilled. I found a niche where I could interact with my teammates on a more global level and merge my love of teaching along with team building and leadership development. That moment when the light bulb comes on for a teammate when I’m doing a training or having a conversation is worth everything; it’s what keeps me coming in the door with the same excitement and energy every day.

I’ve learned that it’s the little things that make a big difference for people to brighten their day: writing personal notes or handing out ice cream on a hot day. I’ve organized art projects with teams’ handprints and finger painting that visually show how everyone works together. That kind of stuff really sticks with them. For those that are struggling in their jobs, my message is: you are not alone, you have a support team that you can plug into and we’re here to help you. If I don’t have the answer, you can bet that I’ll find someone who does!

I often tell people, my dream job is to bring sunshine and happiness to people, making sure everyone feels important. It is really important to me that my teammates know that they are valued. This is because, in truth, none of us can do our jobs without each other, whether you are taking care of patients or supporting those who are caring for patients.  As long as I get to enrich others’ lives in a meaningful way, I’m happy. Here at DaVita, my sparkle is anything but dull.
