Celebrate Memorial Day

Memorial Day has come to mark the beginning of summer. Observed on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day officially honors the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. military. As a military spouse, it is important to me that the true reason for this holiday is not forgotten.

History

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials and holding family gatherings.

However you choose to celebrate Memorial Day this year, if you would like to participate in a special event, take one minute to pause in silence during the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 pm on Memorial Day. This annual event was first started on Memorial Day in 2000 and was signed into law in December of the same year.

Memorial Day Celebrations

Over the past year, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we celebrate holidays. In these times our gatherings aren’t as large, but food remains at the center of the celebration. We usually refer to summer celebrations as cookouts, picnics, or pot-lucks, with the grill being used to prepare everything from meat to fruits and vegetables. This past post is packed full of recipes perfect for your Memorial Day celebration.

For a flavorful low potassium alternative to traditional BBQ sauce try using Apple Butter on pulled chicken, pork, or even ribs. The DaVita.com recipe website has several great barbeque sauce recipes. Try one of these for your next celebration.

Along with the warmer weather comes thirst. Visit this past Kidney Diet Tips post for tips on beating the heat and controlling your fluid intake. When it’s too hot to cook outside or you want that BBQ flavor without having to fire up the grill try using your crockpot. This BBQ beef recipe tastes great on sandwiches or even over rice or pasta.

Happy Memorial Day!
