It’s Easy Being Green: DaVita Green Team of the Year Captain Shares Her Story

My name is Tammy Zutler, and I am a Patient Account Specialist on Team GPS. I’m a full time teammate, but I also wear the hat of being the Green Captain at our Grove neighborhood in Irvine, California. The Green team at the Grove is one of ten green teams across our DaVita Village. In 2018, our dedication to the core value of Continuous Improvement, earned us the coveted 2018 Green Team of the Year Award at DaVita! I am excited to share more about our successes in 2018 at our neighborhood (business office) and green team that led to this award.

Over the past three years, I have seen tremendous growth in the Grove Green Team. When I first joined the Green Team, the committee consisted of only five teammates. We now we have sixteen members from five different departments! This greater team appreciation allows us to reach many more teammates, expand our events, and create new initiatives. The members of our green team are passionate about the environment and deeply care about making a difference here at the Grove. Our team members are more involved this year with events and initiatives. It is no longer a collaboration between the Facilities team and a Green Captain exclusively, but rather a collaboration between the Grove and the Green Team. The attendance at our events has also grown thanks to the diligent committee I get to work with. We are expanding our involvement by increasing visibility, promoting events and initiatives through homeroom visits, and bettering communications to the Grove. In 2018, our team goals were to focus on Grove green building practices and increasing visibility which we achieved with great success!

Initially, we focused on how teammates can go green in their own home rather than how we can impact the Grove itself. We have since evolved from that philosophy and have focused our efforts to make the Grove more environmentally friendly. Our main points of focus included the Earth Day event and conveying messages to the Grove on green conservancy.  In addition to our events, we focused on adoptable and sustainable practices in our everyday operations. This year, the Green Team has intentionally designed initiatives that could be adopted and implemented as Grove building practices. Encouraging communication between Green Team members and their teams has directly impacted the success of these initiatives and how they are received and embraced by our Grove teammates.

Our committee has strengthened its partnerships with other committees and teams. For example, we partnered with the Grove’s Innovation Committee for a book refurbishment event. We are also excited to have the entire Facilities team as part of the Green Team. We have solidified our relationship with the Facilities and are able to work together to improve our building practices. Examples include implementation of a reverse osmosis water systems, assistance with circulating information for our events, and encouragement of teammates to bring reusable dishware to their Friday bagel/donut day. We also formed some great community partners, such as Rock & Wrap It Up, Spectrumotion (an organization that focuses on sustainable commuting in our area), OC Surfrider Foundation – Newport Beach Chapter, and the County of Orange.
