DaVita Rx Teammates Assist Fellow Kidney Care Teammates in Hurricane Harvey Response
Editor’s Note: Medication management is an extremely important part of patient care and may be compromised during disaster situations. Here is one story of our DaVita Rx teammates doing what they can to help.
When we heard about the impact of Hurricane Harvey, we knew our patients would have medication needs, and we wanted to help. We loaded up several vans full of teammates and supplies and headed down to Houston, where we set up local pharmacies at several DaVita® dialysis centers to help care for patients.
If I had to summarize the experience in a few words, it would be “teammates helping teammates helping patients.” Our DaVita Kidney Care teammates were really happy to see us. We got to help many patients, a lot of whom were staying in shelters but were able to find transportation to the DaVita dialysis clinic. We did everything we could to help with patients’ pharmaceutical needs while they dialyzed.
None of this would have been possible without our teammates back in the DaVita Rx® pharmacy. There was so much support on the backend to ensure we had the information we needed to be able to provide the right assistance. Knowing we had a team we could depend on was key, and we couldn’t have done it without you. It truly does take a Village.
What struck me most as I reflected on the day was how quickly it all came together. We were able to mobilize the pharmacy to create local pharmacies in just one day. The Coast Guard is still making rescues – that’s how fresh this disaster is – and we’re already onsite helping take care of patients. To me, that speaks volumes about the spirit of DaVita Rx.
By the end of the day, our team was exhausted, but in a good way. Many people here have lost everything, and it’s going to take a long time for things to get back to normal. But we get to play a role in restoring a little order to what has been a chaotic time for our patients. And for that, I’m grateful.
