Tough-as-Nails Teammate Shares Her Inspirational Story
My teammate Michelle joined the Village as a guest teammate in Revenue Operations (ROPS) in July 2008, and she quickly came onboard as a full-time Patient Account Specialist five months later. Michelle is a vital part of ROPS in Team Music City (a business office located in Nashville, Tenn.); not only because of her extensive experience collecting clinics’ revenue, but also for her tough-as-nails attitude and optimism.
Michelle’s story has been an inspiration to me, and I hope it can be the same for other teammates.
Here’s Michelle’s story in her own words:
“In August 2010, I was diagnosed with kidney cancer, but my spirits were high and I made a full recovery. I had the chance to attend Camp Courage through DaVita in August 2014. The experience was life-changing and I’m so grateful to be a part of a company that takes care of its people in that big of a way. Camp Courage is a five-day outdoor program designed to empower teammates who are currently fighting cancer, or who are cancer survivors, by coming together to face the disease, share their stories, and support each other.
Months after coming home from Camp Courage, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer and won that battle too. A really powerful memory from this whole cancer journey was receiving a handwritten note at home from my Vice President with words of encouragement. I’ve gone through hardships in other companies, but that never happens.
In September 2016, my kidney cancer returned and I had my right kidney removed. The kidney cancer has given me a new perspective on the work I do every day, now as an Assistant Manager in Patient Accounts, to help reduce patients’ financial burdens by collecting payment on their claims. In April I had extensive abdominal surgery to repair damage done from all the previous surgeries. But I am happy to report that I am back in the groove at work and swapping stories of my grandbabies with my team.”
