Frozen Desserts: Kidney-Friendly Summer Treats

Summer is finally here, time to enjoy the sun, beach and grilling. It’s hot outside and it’s time to cool off with some delicious frozen desserts. Sorbets, flavored ices and slushies are a great way to address that sweet tooth. Check out Luscious Low-Potassium Frozen Fruit Treats or see some of the recipes below. These dietitian approved sweet treats will hit the spot and impress your guests. Created for those with chronic kidney disease or dialysis, they are not only satisfying to your taste buds but they are low in potassium and phosphorus too.

In the mood for ice cream? Frozen treats like ice cream, milk shakes and other milk-based recipes are often times limited on a dialysis diet because they are high in potassium and phosphorus. So we have provided a collection of mouthwatering recipes that have low phosphorus ingredients to replace milk. Give them a try and let us know what you think!

Carbohydrates

Did we mention that these recipes can also be worked into a diabetes meal plan? There’s between 13 to 36 grams of carbohydrates per serving. Enjoy one of these irresistible frozen desserts while still monitoring your sugar intake this summer.

Fluids

Are you watching your fluids or on a fluid restriction? Sometimes this is challenging. Remember any frozen food that becomes liquid at room temperature counts as fluid. Monitoring portion sizes is key. You can also try freezing berries or grapes and enjoy them as mini ice pops. Or making mini flavored ice pops by adding lemon or lime to individual ice cubes.

Regardless of your preference, we have something for everyone to enjoy. Following your kidney diet may be easier than you think. So sit back, relax and enjoy a frozen kidney-friendly treat with a DaVita.com recipe.
