Kidney Diet Tips

Dining Out Successfully at Mexican Fiesta Restaurant

My next food adventure takes me to an authentic Mexican restaurant in Canton, Michigan called Mexican Fiesta. If you love Mexican food you are actually in luck. There are lots of options that fit the kidney diet. From tacos, taco salad, enchiladas to burritos, fajitas and more, there’s a great variety.

Ordering Mexican Restaurant Food

When I went to Mexican Fiesta I ordered chicken tacos and a side of Spanish  rice. I asked for the tacos without tomatoes or cheese to help reduce potassium and phosphorus. Mexican restaurants often serve generous portions. You can plan to box half of your meal like I did, or share it with a friend.

Here are some other options that are good picks at Mexican Fiesta or other similar Mexican restaurants:

Entrees

  • Beef, Chicken or Fish Tacos
  • Chicken or Beef Burritos
  • Breakfast Burrito
  • Beef, Chicken or Shrimp Fajita
  • Beef, Chicken or Fish Enchiladas with limited Chile con Carne
  • Mesquite Grilled Chicken with Grilled Vegetables

Salads

  • Taco Salad
  • Grilled Chicken Salad

Sides

  • Grilled Vegetables
  • Spanish Rice

Some other things to bear in mind when dining out at a Mexican restaurant is to hold the cheese and beans. It is very easy to overindulge in these higher potassium and phosphorus add-ons. Skip the queso, guacamole and potatoes, and limit the salsa and salsa verde to 1 to 2 tablespoons.

What about Tortillas?

Stick with flour tortillas if they are homemade. Many commercially made flour tortillas contain baking powder. This increases the sodium and potassium content. Corn tortillas are higher in phosphorus compared to homemade flour tortillas. Limit the number of tortillas you eat (and don’t forget to count the tortilla chips!).

Next time you dine out try a Mexican restaurant and enjoy!!
