I managed the ketogenic diet used in children with seizure disorders in children. One of the side effects we noticed, studied and published findings was the increased bruising (platelet fragility) in some patients on the ketogenic diet. These were children not treated with anticoagulants or other blood thinning medications as prescribed for many people with diabetic kidney disease. I am excited about possibly helping patients use the ketogenic diet to reverse kidney disease in the future. But, closely monitored controlled studies using the diet while monitoring side effects are needed. This diet is not a “stand-alone at your kitchen sink” diet. Metabolic changes occur that may cause harm if not medically monitored with a person’s health care team.
