DaVita Dietitians Go Beyond Dialysis to Improve Nutrition

March 1st marks the beginning of National Nutrition Month and National Kidney Month. This year the DaVita Dietitian team, made of over 1500 renal dietitians, is making waves by helping to improve nutrition not only for their dialysis patients, but for their teammates and local communities. The project, “Creating a Wave of Healthy Choices”, was created in recognition that preventing kidney disease begins with healthy eating. DaVita’s Nutrition Services department sees an opportunity for dietitians to make an impact by sharing their expertise with local groups to encourage healthy eating and nutritious food choices.

Daily health tips will be shared with patients and co-workers at dialysis centers each day during March.  DaVita dietitians will provide interactive activities to their co-workers, such as the game “The Biggest Loser (of Poor Food Choices)” which includes fun activities to learn about portions “Don’t Super-size Me” and “The Size is Right”. An activity “Produce More with Produce” will provide a fun way to increase knowledge of the benefits of eating more fresh produce, and creative ways to plan more produce into work lunches and snacks. Post Tour DaVita

IMG_0864Today’s post is a little off subject, but I thought you might enjoy reading about last week’s ride. I feel a sense of accomplishment after 3 days of exploring western Michigan on a bicycle with 349 other Tour DaVita participants. The event, sponsored by The Kidney Trust raised over $650,000 to help provide early kidney disease screening and education throughout the country.

Tour DaVita–a ride to help people at risk for kidney disease

I’ve never been to Michigan…until this week. Back in the spring I dusted off my bicycle and started doing weekly rides in preparation for Tour DaVita, a bike ride fund raising event sponsored by The Kidney Trust. Holiday eating for kidney patients on a low phosphorus diet

Diet Analysis Tools and Correct Totals for Potassium and Phosphorus

People with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and those on dialysis need to be aware of how much protein, potassium, sodium, phosphorus and calcium they consume. Since phosphorus and potassium are not required on food labels, food manufacturers may not analyze and provide data on these nutrients. Many online diet analysis tools provide only the available nutrient data. When values are missing, these tools calculate a zero value. Consequently, a person using the tool may assume they are eating less potassium or phosphorus than they actually consume.

DaVita’s online meal planning tool for kidney diets, DaVita Diet Helper, includes a Nutrition Log where users can enter foods eaten and view nutrient values for calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, carbohydrate, fiber, sugars, protein, sodium, potassium, phosphorus and calcium.

Each food in the database includes a complete nutrient profile, including potassium and phosphorus content. Users can be sure all the values are correct and potassium and phosphorus are not falsely low when using DaVita Diet Helper to analyze their daily food intake.
